Drawing Prompt: Firefly + Starfleet
Dr. Simon Tam of Starfleet Space Station Deep Space 9 meets Lieutenant Washburne Zoe’s old Bajoran resistance commander Mal. It goes badly for everyone.
(See this note about us posting occasional non-limerick things, like doofy pencil doodles of drawing prompts we give each other.)
At some point, the daring Dr. Bashir, on his way to practice frontier medicine on Bajor crosses paths with the flighty, yet brilliant, River Tam. They see each other across a Dabo table when they each notice the other quietly and efficiently calculating the odds of the game. (They both come to the conclusion that Jadzia Dax will take the prize money. Which she does.) They observe one another from a distance for several days. Bashir waits because Garak has made him paranoid about anyone new; it also quickly becomes clear to him that as brilliant as this mysterious girl may be, she is severely unbalanced. River waits because simply because she likes to watch, but eventually, her curiosity gets the best of her.
She joins him one day while he’s eating his breakfast at Quark’s, interrupting his morning ritual of raktajino and medical journals, by loudly sitting down across the table. Their conversation is rocky at first (as to be expected with River) but eventually falls into a comfortable, if slightly awkward rhythm. They arrange to meet up for dinner the next night, where they pick up right where they left off. Dinner soon turns into night, followed by the wee hours of the morning and the two are still talking animatedly in Bashir’s corner of sickbay.
They quickly become close friends, grateful for someone whose mind can move as quickly as their own. They even work together to try to improve River’s mental health (though they keep it on the down-low so that Simon doesn’t find out and become upset), and combined with Dr. Tam’s treatments, they do make a moderate amount of progress.
After tackling that project they quickly become antsy until they find some other complex problem to solve. Eventually, Bashir and River fall into a rhythm; get bored, find a problem with the universe, ponder and poke at said problem, and finally, find some way to fix it. Every once in a while they’ll skip out for a few days. While it’s commonly assumed that they enjoy sightseeing and camping on alien planets, their excursion more commonly take them to the edges of the universe, to save entire planets, restore order in parallel universes, or untangle the mess that Kirk made of the space-time continuum.
Together, they are a force to be reckoned with and no power in the ‘verse can stop them.
…ok, I think I got a bit carried away there.
Alkjalkjdfkad, yaaaaaaaaay for expanded Firefly/Deep Space 9 thoughts re: my goofy fanart. This makes me happy because a) Bashir is obviously forever and ever my favorite amen and b) wacky genetically enhanced genius adventures in space! What could be better?
