I was reorganizing my “photos of attractive celebrities” file, and I noticed some themes in my Star Trek photos. Half the other pictures in the file are men in classy formalwear or arty black and white close-up of Lucy Liu’s face… and then there’s the torn shirt, evil doppelganger, knifeplay, domination, roleplaying corner.

Into Darkness shows more racial diversity among cameos from alien species than it does among human characters in main speaking roles. Worse still, iconic Star Trekvillain Khan Noonien Singh was recast as Benedict Cumberbatch, possibly the whitest man on the planet.
In Khan’s original role, he was super-intelligent, super-strong, the head of a genetically engineered master race—and brown. In other words, the opposite of the usual racial stereotypes one saw in mid-20th century “foreign” or “exotic” villains. Whitewashing Khan into being an posh-sounding Englishman reinforces the message sent out by Kirk, Spock, and the morally ambiguous Admiral Marcus: Good or evil, everyone in power is a white male. Suddenly, the awkwardness surrounding one of John Cho’s publicity interviews makes sense. “Who is your favourite villain?” he is asked. “Ricardo Montalban,” he answers. “He was badass. I think Supernatural Season 3 actually marks the turning point in my ability to tolerate the word “bitch”, especially when said by men? I mean, the season came out my sophomore year of college, when age and maturity + actually spending time with men after seven years in an all-girl’s utopia + my first heterosexual relationship + feminist blogs were all conspiring to increase my awareness of widespread societal sexism, so it obviously wasn’t the only factor! But I missed the last half of the season due to college craziness, and then decided to marathon catch up with the it over the summer, despite widespread criticism of it on my friends list. Somewhere around the TEN MILLIONTH TIME Dean called a woman a bitch or a slut, I punched a hole in the wall and broke up with the show forever, leaving that relationship with nothing to show for it but a better music collection and a lot of shiny new feminist rage.

Just listened to the Radiolab show on a very premature birth and sobbed through my whole car ride home and then curled up in bed and kept listening to it and kept silently sobbing while also cry-eating CheezIts and thinking, “I want a baaaaaby I could have a baby I’m probably ovulating over Labor Day why don’t I have a baby with someone from Anime Boston THIS IS NOT A CRAZY THOUGHT.”

What I am saying is that going off the pill last year has made the week leading up to my period a beautiful carnival of crazy hormone feelings, despondency, and anticipatory cramps; the way our bodies constantly find new awful ways to surprise us is an eternal joy.

Also that that show was beautiful and sad and terrifying and hopeful and made me even more in awe that people continue to get pregnant even when it can be so scary and heartbreaking. I want my mom to come home so we can start early Mother’s Day cuddling.

But also, I feel like their waffles are the result of satanic sacrifice because they are legit NOT OF THIS WORLD.

Waffle House is a shining bastion of things I no longer eat and let me tell you I love the fucking place and every time I make it to a state that has one I eat there and I suffer the consequences and IT’S WORTH IT.

WAIT, what happened to the one in Arizona? The final destination of my quixotic post-breakup journey? The White Castle to me and my high school best friend’s Harold and Kumar? The place for which I missed Mother’s Day with my grandmother and had my second (and final) run-in with the police? THE ONE THAT MADE ME WHO I AM TODAY.
